Gutter Installation and Replacement

Proudly serving Carmel, Fishers, McCordsville, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville & the surrounding Central Indiana communities

Ever wonder where all that water goes during a heavy rainstorm? It’s easy to enjoy the sound of rain on the roof — but behind that loveliness, all that water has to go somewhere. Your gutters are what keep it away from your home’s foundation, siding, and landscaping. Left neglected, or installed poorly in the first place, small drainage problems turn into expensive ones fast.

If you’re researching gutter replacement or a first-time installation, here’s what actually separates a gutter system that works from one that just looks fine until the next big storm.

Robert Stevens Roofing has installed and replaced gutter systems for Central Indiana homeowners for 30 years. We measure and cut every system on-site, fit it to your specific roofline, and make sure it’s sloped and secured correctly before we leave.

Why Gutter Size Matters

Gutter size plays a bigger role than most homeowners realize. A steeper roof moves more water at once, and undersized gutters can’t keep up — they overflow right where you don’t want water pooling, along your foundation.

Most newer homes come with 5-inch gutters and 2×3-inch downspouts as standard. These are sometimes called “builder grade” — they meet code and do the job, but they’re sized to keep costs down for the builder, not to handle heavy flow with room to spare. For a more substantial system built to handle real volume, 6-inch gutters paired with 3×4-inch downspouts move significantly more water and are far less prone to overflow during heavy rain.

What We Install

6-Inch Aluminum
Aluminum is the most common and practical choice for most homes. It’s durable, low-maintenance, and holds up well through Indiana winters. We recommend 6-inch gutters over the standard 5-inch for nearly every home we work on, because 6-inch gutters hold 50% more water than 5-inch ones, and Central Indiana receives enough annual rainfall that the added capacity matters.

Copper
Copper gutters are a long-term investment. They’re more expensive upfront but can last 50 years or more with minimal maintenance. They also develop a natural patina over time that many homeowners prefer for the look. If you’re interested in copper, we’ll walk you through what to expect from both a cost and maintenance standpoint.

Getting the Slope Right

Proper drainage depends on the right slope, and it’s subtle enough that you’d probably never notice it just by looking. Gutters need a slight, consistent pitch toward the downspouts so water moves the way it’s supposed to instead of sitting still — standing water is exactly what leads to sagging, rust, and premature failure. A professional installer sets that offset precisely; it’s not something you can eyeball or install “close enough.”

The Seamless Advantage

This is where professional installation really pays off: seamless gutters. Rather than piecing together sections that create seams — and future leak points — your Robert Stevens Roofing crew arrives with coil stock in your chosen color and forms your entire gutter run on-site, custom-fit to your home, with precise miters cut for every corner and downspout.

The result is a continuous run with far fewer joints, which means far fewer places for a leak to start. It’s a small detail that makes a real difference over the life of the system.

How We Approach Installation

We confirm slope before the job is finished, and we look at downspout placement, sizing, and discharge points on every project so water moves away from your foundation.

For replacement projects, we remove your existing gutters carefully to avoid damage to siding, fascia, or landscaping, and dispose of the old material.

Signs You Need Gutter Replacement

Not every gutter problem requires a full replacement, but some issues are a sign that the system has reached the end of its useful life:

  • Gutters pulling away from the fascia in multiple spots
  • Visible cracks, holes, or splits along the gutter body
  • Persistent sagging that doesn’t correct after reattachment
  • Water pooling consistently at your foundation after rain
  • Gutters that are 20 or more years old and showing widespread wear
  • Rust or corrosion that has spread across multiple sections

If you’re unsure whether repair or replacement is the right call, we’ll come out, take a look, and give you a straight answer.

The Finishing Touch for Your Home

Gutters are often the most overlooked part of a home’s exterior — but a clean, well-matched gutter system is genuinely the finishing touch. Paired with a new roof, new gutters make the whole investment look sharp and intentional rather than like an afterthought, and they protect everything else you’ve invested in underneath.

Gutters connect directly to your roofline and fascia board. When one has a problem, it often affects the other. Rotted fascia can’t hold gutters securely regardless of how well they’re installed, and water backing up under shingles from a clogged or improperly pitched gutter causes damage that shows up as a roofing problem. Because we handle both roofing and gutters, we look at the full system when we’re on your home. If we see something worth flagging, we’ll tell you.

For most homes, a full gutter replacement can be completed in a single day. Larger homes or those with significant fascia work may take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when we come out for the estimate.

You don’t need to be present for the work itself, but we do like to walk through the project with you beforehand so you understand what’s being done and why.

6-inch gutters hold 50% more water than 5-inch gutters. For most Central Indiana homes, 6-inch is the right choice given the amount of rainfall the area receives. We’ll confirm the right size based on your roof pitch and drainage needs.

Yes. If you’re interested in gutter protection, installing guards at the same time as new gutters is the most efficient approach. We offer LeafBlaster PRO guards in all-aluminum, stainless micro-mesh, and frame-reinforced styles. See our Gutter Guards page for more information.

Yes, and it’s usually the more efficient approach. Since gutters and roofing are connected, having one contractor handle both means better coordination and fewer things that get missed at the roofline.

A seamless gutter is formed from a single continuous piece of material cut to length on-site, rather than assembled from pre-cut sections. Because there are no seams along the run — only at corners and downspout connections — there are far fewer places for leaks to develop over time. We bring coil stock to your home and form every gutter run on-site to fit your exact roofline.

For homes with 6-inch gutters, we recommend 3×4-inch downspouts. Standard 2×3-inch downspouts are common in builder-grade installations but can become a bottleneck during heavy rain. Larger downspouts also clog less frequently, which means less maintenance over time.
