Gutter Guards and Gutter Protection
Gutter guards are covers or inserts that sit over your gutters and block debris from getting in while still allowing water to flow through. The goal is simple: reduce how often your gutters clog and cut down on the maintenance they need.
For homeowners in Central Indiana, where mature trees are common and fall leaf drop is heavy, gutter guards can make a real difference in how often gutters need attention and how long they hold up.
Robert Stevens Roofing installs gutter guards for homeowners across the greater Indianapolis area, including Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, and Zionsville. We’ll assess your home and tell you honestly whether guards are worth it before recommending anything.

How Gutter Guards Work
Most gutter guard systems work by covering the top of your gutter with a mesh, screen, or solid cover that lets water in while keeping leaves and debris out. Water either flows through the material or follows the curve of the cover into the gutter below, depending on the design.
The effectiveness of any gutter guard depends on how well it’s matched to your home. Factors that matter:
- Tree coverage: homes with heavy leaf drop need a different solution than homes with minimal trees. Pine needles, for example, require a finer mesh than large leaves.
- Roof pitch: steeper roofs affect how fast water and debris travel toward the gutter.
- Gutter size: guards need to be correctly sized to your gutters to fit and function properly.
- Climate: Indiana’s freeze/thaw cycles affect how certain guard types hold up over time.
We look at all of these before making a recommendation.
Our Gutter Guard Options
We install LeafBlaster PRO gutter guards, backed by a 40-year warranty. There are three styles, so we can match the guard to the trees and debris around your home.

What Gutter Guards Can and Can’t Do
Gutter guards significantly reduce debris accumulation. They don’t eliminate maintenance entirely, and it’s worth being upfront about that. Fine material like shingle grit can still collect over time, and gutters with guards still benefit from occasional inspection.
What gutter guards do well
- Prevent large debris from blocking water flow
- Reduce how often gutters need to be cleaned out
- Protect fascia from moisture caused by standing water in clogged gutters
- Help prevent ice dams by keeping gutters clear going into winter
What to be realistic about
- No guard system is fully maintenance-free
- Fit and installation quality matters. A poorly fitted guard can make drainage worse
- Some guard types work better for specific debris types than others
We’ll give you a straight picture of what to expect for your specific property.
When Gutter Guards Make Sense
Not every home needs gutter guards. If your property has minimal tree coverage and your gutters drain cleanly, the maintenance reduction may not be worth the cost. We’d rather tell you that than sell you something unnecessary.
Homes that tend to benefit most:
- Properties with significant tree coverage, especially deciduous trees
- Homeowners who want to reduce how often they’re dealing with ladder work or paying for gutter cleanouts
- Homes where clogged gutters have caused recurring fascia or foundation issues
- Anyone installing new gutters who wants to reduce long-term upkeep from the start

Gutter Guards on New vs. Existing Gutters
Gutter guards can be added to existing gutters or installed as part of a new gutter installation. If your current gutters are in good condition, adding guards is straightforward. If your gutters are nearing the end of their life, it usually makes more sense to replace the gutters first and add guards as part of that project. Installing guards on a system that needs replacing in a year or two isn’t a good use of the investment.
We’ll look at your current gutters and tell you which approach makes sense. If replacement is the better call, learn more about our seamless gutter installation.
